Worship Committee

The Worship Committee is responsible for just about everything associated with worship and worship related events at Deep River Community Church.  It schedules and plans services, provides the necessary resources for them, receives feedback, and evaluates past worship services.  It organizes special services, such as Anniversary Sunday, as well as worship related social functions.  The committee meets about once a month from Sept. to June   Meetings are advertised in the church bulletin and anyone is welcome to attend.

Missions Committee

The congregation of Deep River Community Church has always had a strong commitment to helping other people in need around the world.  This commitment is fulfilled through our Missions Committee. 

The Missions Committee has 6-8 members and meets approximately 4-6  times per year.   The Committee distributes approximately $38,000 to people who need support both locally and around the world. We used to support Ten Thousand Villages with a large sale each fall, but the closure of Ten Thousand Villages ended this program. We currently support projects in Africa, Central America, Kingston, Montreal, and North Renfrew along with support for the United Church of Canada and the Presbyterian Church. The Committee continues to receive pleas for help in many places around the world and we as a congregation strive to do what we can for these people, while maintaining the needed support to ensure the continuation of our own church community.

Christian Education Committee

Christian Education programming is currently being revised. Deep River Community Church sponsors the Junior Co-Ed camp at Camp Lau-Ren, a camp of the United Church of Canada.

Stewardship Committee

What does the Stewardship Committee do at Deep River Community Church?  One dictionary definition of “steward” is “a person who manages another’s property or financial affairs”.  In a sense, this is what we do for the church.  In order to maintain services and function successfully, the church must rely on material and human resources.  We need the money to be able to carry out activities plus the people to do this work.  Our main responsibility is in the fall when we mail out a stewardship letter asking members and adherents to indicate their financial assistance for the coming year and also to indicate in which aspects of church life he or she would like to participate.  In this way the church leaders can see what resources will be available for the next year.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is a wide-ranging group, whose members attend to many aspects of congregational life within the church.  It keeps the congregation and others informed about activities, events and changes in the life of the church and its members, using a variety of avenues including the bi-weekly Grapevine newsletter, photograph boards and books and articles in the North Renfrew Times.  It keeps records of the church membership through the role clerk who is normally the church secretary.  Some members are responsible for developing and maintaining our church website.  Others provide service by doing important jobs such as sending out cards and as social convenor.

Personnel Committee

The Personnel Committee oversees the working relationships among Church staff, our Program and special Committees, and members of our congregation.  The Committee strives to work in a confidential, consultative and supportive way and welcomes input from all concerned.  Committee members are the Chair and Vice-Chair of Council, chairs of the Worship and Property Committees, and the Treasurer.  A chairperson for the Personnel Committee is appointed by Council and is independent of all other committees and specific functions.  Persons with concerns are encouraged to contact the Chair of the Personnel Committee.

Property Committee

The Property Committee ensures that the physical properties of our church and their contents (Christian Education Centre, church and manse) are maintained in good working order and are safe.  The work consists primarily of routine maintenance, repairs and replacement of worn-out equipment.  It is important that the properties suit the needs of the congregation and organizations in the community that use the facilities, so the work also includes additions, modifications and alterations.

As a program committee of Council, the Property Committee routinely reports to Council.  Approval of Council is obtained before major projects are carried out and any work that might alter or significantly affect the normal operation of the church or our worship is also taken to Council for their approval before being started.  The Property Committee works within an annual budget reviewed by Council and approved by the congregation at the Annual Meeting.  Much of the work required is obvious and other work is suggested by Council, but members of the congregation are encouraged to make suggestions to Council or the Property Committee at any time.

Leading With Care

Five members of Deep River Community Church attended a workshop of the Presbytery of Lanark and Renfrew of the Presbyterian Church in Canada on protecting vulnerable people in 2003 October.

The Policy to protect vulnerable people in Deep River Community Church was passed by Council 2003 11 30.

POLICY For Protection and Care of Vulnerable People 

It is the policy of Deep River Community Church that all persons, in particular children, youth and vulnerable adults, who participate in and/or use the facilities of Deep River Community Church, shall be cared for with Christian compassion and be safe. This shall be achieved by following procedures that prevent or mitigate against unsafe actions or situations, that prepare (train and exercise) people to prevent or minimize unsafe actions, that respond with the legal and compassionate steps should any unsafe situation occur and that provide recovery with Christian compassion for all parties affected should there be any unsafe occurrence. 

This policy covers federal and provincial requirements under their laws and regulations, insurance requirements, due diligence and Christian compassion. 


An agreement for those renting space in our church buildings was prepared and use started in 2004. It covers release of liability, etc. Also police checks were started in 2004 with Bea McIntosh as Secretary and Rod Delaney as Co-ordinator CMD as the two authorized by the OPP to receive the police checks on behalf of Deep River Community Church. 

Two documents were drafted in 2005 November, “Leading with Care” and “Supporting with Care”, and the membership of the Leading with Care Committee was passed by Council on 2005 December 11. The membership comprises the Chair (who must be knowledgeable in “Leading with Care”), the Minister, the Chair of Council, and the Chairs of Christian Education and of Membership. In the first document, it is stated that the Ministers and Council will set an example and will model to the congregation their commitment to safety and prevention including agreeing to a Police Records Check. Also in the first document, the method of reviewing risks are outlined. The italicized portion of the policy is the focus of the “Supporting with Care” document.. 

Rod Delaney attended the subsequent workshop at the Renfrew Presbyterian Church in 2006 February 18. It was lead by David Phillips, the Leading with Care Co-ordinator for the Presbyterian Church in Canada. The main body of the workshop was three scenarios which were to be considered by the individual churches. As the only representative of Deep River Community Church, Rod sat with the representatives of the host church. 

As part of the Kids’ Church Leaders workshop in the fall of 2006, a presentation on Leading with Care was given to the leaders.

Pastoral Care Committee

We are currently rebuilding our Pastoral Care work, beginning with our system of telephone calls. Pastoral care currently includes sending cards to people who are ill or have lost a loved one, a system of telephone calls to check on people during this time of self-isolation, and by the minister when called upon.

Informal Lay Pastoral Care
Informal pastoral care is continually encouraged and frequently provided on an on-going, informal basis by the outreach of countless individuals who make a point of showing concern at coffee hour after worship and during chance encounters in the community. (This would not be formalized by the Chair of Lay Pastoral Care).

Revenue Committee

The revenue committee was established in 2016 to coordinate and monitor various means of revenue generation for DRCC.   

Investments: In 2016, an investment account was opened for memorial funds that were designated for future long term growth.  Initially the $50,000 bequest from Jessie Brown was placed in this account and its value was $51,985 on Jan 1 2017.  During 2017, the Grace Barrington fund ($10,500) was added to this account.  The value of this Legacy account was $70,949 on Dec 31, 2017.  Also during 2017 an Infrastructure Investment account was opened with an initial investment of $75,000 which grew to $78,536 by Dec 31, 2017.   These investment accounts are monitored quarterly by the Revenue Committee.

As we prepare to replace Rev. Jim Kenney, our transition minister, in the summer of 2021, we recruited a search committee. While the membership has not been officially approved at a congregational meeting, it has been endorsed by the Council and recommended to the congregation. At this time, it is sending out a survey to the congregation asking for input regarding desired qualities for the next minister with a request to return the survey by July 19. The MSC will then prepare a desired profile for the next minister and revise the recent Needs Assessment Report for approval by the Council. We anticipate having a Needs Assessment, Position Description and other items ready by September 1 for posting and promoting to invite applications.
